Bass, fresh off his screenwriting Academy Award win for Rain Man (1988), believed – unlike numerous Hollywood executives – that the particular structure of the novel could stay mostly intact, nevertheless requiring some sort of framing device to anchor the proceedings. The Joy Luck Club retains much of its literary soul, and that is thanks to the partnership between Tan, Wang, and Bass. For reasons that are selfish and have to do entirely with this now-nine-year-old blog’s focus on classic movies and contextualizing movies whenever or wherever they come from, that distinction seems fitting.
